Adventure doesn’t come shorter than a 12 days Uganda gorilla trek and Rwenzori hike. This epic primate adventure experience is a perfect way to put your love for nature to the test as you endure the thrilling hike to Uganda’s tallest mountain.

Before your hike, you will encounter the endangered mountain gorillas tucked away in their natural habitat. Your hike of Mountain Rwenzori aims for Margherita Peak, but between your climbing adventure, make stopovers at the designated huts or camps to catch your breath. Day by Day itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

From the moment you arrive at Entebbe International Airport, you will be welcomed by our professional guide driver. He will take you through the briefing on how your 12 days Uganda gorilla trek and Rwenzori hike.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in the southwestern region of the country and takes about 8-9 hours to get there from Kampala. You will journey all the way through with a stopover for lunch, and by the close of the day, in the evening you will arrive at your lodge in the park, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking and Batwa experience

In the morning of your second day in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, you will wake up to an incredible breakfast. After this, our guide driver will transfer you to the briefing center for a pre-trekking briefing. During the briefing center, you will be taken through the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking and the expected code of conduct while in the presence of the primates.

After your grouping into groups of 8 people, you will advance into the forest guided by a guide range. You will search through the forest for hours for the assigned gorilla family, and before long, encounter the endangered mountain gorillas. You will be given an hour in their presence for a breathtaking moment with the gorillas as you watch them play, rest, and groom their young. Head back to the park offices where our guide driver will drive you back to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you will embark on a Batwa experience where you explore their culture and lifestyle, as they entertain you with their traditional dance and songs. In the evening, you will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Transfer to Mountain Rwenzori National Park

At daybreak, you will have an early breakfast and check out of the lodge in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and embark on the journey to Mountain Rwenzori National Park.

This incredible journey takes you through the countryside road, where you will witness the lifestyle of the natives by the roadside and interact with the people on a lunch stopover. You will arrive in the park at your lodge later on and have dinner and rest for the night ahead.

Day 4: Hike from Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut

In the morning, have breakfast and proceed to the Rwenzori mountaineering services at the park offices for a briefing. Each hike begins with a briefing to prepare you for what lies ahead. At the end of the briefing, check the climbing gear and hire porters to help carry your luggage for the rest of the hike. Climbing to the highest peak, Margherita takes about 7-8 days depending on the physical ability of the hiker.

Start your hike from Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut where you will journey through the plantations of the locals. Cross over the River Mubuku and Muhoma, and move through the local homesteads. Journey across the papyrus and grass shrubs through the bamboo plantations and proceed on the steep rocky terrain. Arrive at Nyabitaba Hut in the evening, dinner and rest for the night ahead.

Day 5: Journey from Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut

The warm sun rise will awake your adventure spirit to a warm early breakfast. Your aim for the day will be John Matte Hut at 3,505 meters high. Along the hike to this hut, expect to encounter various bird species in the bamboo forest as you cross the Kurt Shafer Bridge below the Mubuku and Bujuku Rivers.

Traverse through the tall moorland grass and heather before stopping for lunch with a view of Mount Stanley and Mount Speke in the distance. Working on time, you will later proceed with your hike and by evening you will be arriving at John Matte Hut for dinner and rest.

Day 6: Head to Bujuku camp

In the morning, have breakfast and begin your hike to Bujuku camp. While on this hiking experience, your physique will be put to a test with the challenging muddy and slippery terrain.

As you maneuver through this terrain, you will then cross the Bujuku River and the Bigo swamp that breathes from the Bujuku Lake in the valley. As you enjoy the sights and sounds in this valley, you will have lunch or a snack to boost your energy. Embrace the journey after to Bujuku camp where you will spend the evening, arrive for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Climb to Elena Hut

Arise to an early breakfast to prepare your body for the challenging part of your hiking experience, the journey to Mount Stanley. This is considered the actual hike given it presents a tough experience. The faint-hearted usually give up on this level before the extreme experience begins.

The hike to Elena Hut, the highest camp or hut standing at 4,541 meters, will take you through the steep rocky terrain ever slippery from being moistened by the melting glaciers. You will have a glimpse of the glaciers at the highest peak in the distance as you unpack your lunch for devouring. As the sun travels west, you will continue your hike in the race against time and arrive at the Elena Hut before dark for dinner and rest.

Day 8: Ascend to Margherita Peak and Kitandara Hut

As the sun rises to break the darkness of the night, you will have breakfast as you enjoy the clear views of Margherita in the distance. Ascend the Mount Stanley through the slippery frozen rocks to Margherita Peak, the highest point in Uganda.

Immerse yourself with a photo moment and enjoy the sights of the endless glaciers and mountain ranges that attest to the mountain’s name as the Mountains of the Moon. Descend to Kitandara Hut before dusk and have dinner and rest in satisfaction after completing the ultimate adventure.

Day 9: Descend to Guy Yeoman Hut

As the rule of gravity states, what goes up must come back down, you will descend to Guy Yeoman Hut after your breakfast. Pass through the mystifying montane vegetation that dominates here. You will also be artistic crafted waterfalls at Kabumba caves where you will enjoy your lunch amidst nature. In the evening you will arrive at Guy Yeoman Hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 10: Slope down to Nyabitaba Hut

Immediately after your breakfast, you will hike down to the Nyabitaba Hut. The hike will take you through the slippery and muddy trails with sights and sounds from various bird species. Spot a few primates if you’re lucky. In the evening, you will have an overnight at Nyabitaba Hut after your dinner.

Day 11: Descend to Nyakalengija Hut

After your breakfast at Nyabitaba Hut, you will slope down to Nyakalengija Hut where it all began. The journey is short but challenging, involving muddy trails and also crossing the River Mubuku.

Have lunch as you close in to the end of your safari trip and head to the offices of the park to close up your 12 days Uganda gorilla trek and Rwenzori hike. Our driver guide will then transfer you to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 12: Departure

Breakfast will be served very early as you check out of the lodge for the journey back to the airport for your departure. Travel for about 7 hours, and enjoy a lunch stopover, and by evening you will be at Entebbe International Airport for departure flight back home.
