Explore volcanoes national park for mountain gorilla trekking experience. There are 10 habituated gorillas, and visitors can get to spend 1 hour with the gentle giants in their natural habitat.
You can also track golden monkeys or visit Dian Fossey tomb.
Day by Day itinerary
Day 1: Kigali airport arrival and transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Arrive in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital and meet your guide at the airport. See Kigali on the way driving to Musanze in the Northern Province. Check in your lodge on the slopes of virunga volcanoes, a natural habitat for endangered mountain gorillas. Have dinner and overnight stay at Sabinyo silverback lodge/ Mountain Gorilla View Lodge.
Day 2: Gorilla tracking and cultural tour
At 07 am after breakfast at the lodge, you transfer to Kinigi to attend briefing on the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking. The trek starts with a transfer to the trailhead where you leave the vehicles and go hiking on foot searching for gorillas in the bamboo and tropical forest. Once gorillas are located, visitors are allowed to spend 1 hour taking photos and observing the natural lifestyle of the gentle giants.
After the gorilla experience, you’ll transfer back to Kinigi and receive a gorilla trekking certificate. Settle for lunch at the lodge. Visit Iby’iwacu cultural village in the afternoon for a cultural experience.
Day 3: Golden monkey tracking / Dian Fossey hike
Have breakfast at the lodge and transfer to kinigi for golden monkey trekking experience. Then set out on foot to track the shy golden monkeys, a species of old world monkeys that are endemic to virunga volcanoes. Stroll through the bamboo forest where golden monkeys can be observed for 1 hour. Alternatively you may go for a hike to Dian Fossey Tomb located in the saddle between Karisimbi and Bisoke volcanoes. Dian Fossey was a primatologist renowned to study gorillas and inspiring the global conservation community for their protection and conservation. She established karisoke research in 1967 which is used to develop long-term gorilla research and conservation.
After any of the activity, you return back to the lodge for relaxation.
Day 4: Return back to Kigali
After breakfast, the tour ends with a transfer back to Kigali. Your tour guide will drop you off at the airport or preferred place. End of the tour.
